According to one source, Donovan was forced to make a rash decision by the Magic management — and he regretted it shortly after agreeing to the contract.
Speculation centered on VCU coach and former Gators assistant Anthony Grant replacing Donovan quickly. In fact, Grant was slated to meet with Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley on Saturday morning.
However, shortly after landing in Virginia, Foley had to return due to an emergency. One source confirmed that the emergency was that Donovan contacted Foley about returning.
Is this a ploy to keep recent Gator commit Jai Lucas from singing for say, oh, Kentucky? Lucas didn't seem too happy when Donovan announced he was leaving.
Whatever it is, this seems to be the theme with college coaches these days. remember Rich Rodriguez? I guess the coaches admire the kids that they are paid to coach, who seem to toy with universities while making their college decisions.
In all seriousness, I was shocked when I heard that Donovan was leaving Gainesville for the NBA, so this latest batch of news doesn't really surprise me at all. I wonder what the Magic think about all of this? I'm sure we'll find out sooner rather than later.
UPDATE: Andy Katz is now reporting that the Magic may decide as early as Monday if they will let Donovan out his contract.
