Spelling Bee Memories

Quite possibly the greatest moment in National Spelling Bee history happenned back in 1997. It was down to the final two and Rebecca Sealfon stepped to the microphone knowing that if she spelled the word 'Euonym' correctly, she would be crowned the champion.

As I sit here at my desk and watch this year's edition, I just don't see the emotion in the kids that Rebecca put on display just ten years ago. The kids of today seem to be more worried about replay and protests. What I wouldn't give for another moment like that! Overly cocky, yet filled with pure childish joy, that is how Rebecca Sealfon, the Champion Speller of the Year 1997, will always be remembered.
