A Day at the Park -- Practice Notes

Observations from today's "Organized Team Activity"...

-- Jim Zorn was wearing pants. He has worn pants everyday this week. Hopefully they are sweat-absorbing pants of some kind. I wore pants today as well. Pants were not a good choice.

-- An air horn was signifying the end of each session of practice. This is a change from the Gibbs 2.0 regime. Gibbs used a whistle to end each session. Media members were commenting on the difference. "The guys like Fabini just kinda toot the horn at offbeat times," Zorn said after practice. "You know he'll run up to our equipment guy and just grab it, hit it, just for fun. We gotta get our equipment guys to stay away from the O Line."

-- Another difference that some of the assembled media pointed out was that there weren't any refs at the practice. Zorn was asked about the significance of this after practice, but it was boring, and I didn't listen to what he said.

-- Shaun Suisham changed into flat-footed sneakers half-way through practice.

-- Speaking of special teams, rookie punter Durant Brooks was the essence of the "lonely kicker" at practice. He just looked like he wanted to punt, but no one was helping him out. I felt bad and wanted to ask him if he wanted to boot some to me, but I don't know how the coaching staff or the pr department would have felt about that. Maybe another day, huh?

-- After watching Ethan Albright work the Jugs Machine, it's obvious why he's a pro bowler. He really has great control of that thing. (All kidding aside, the Red Snapper is one of favorite Redskins)

-- After rookie receiver Devin Thomas caught a long pass from fellow rookie Colt Brennan, Mike Sellers was clearly heard barking, "YOU BETTER CATCH THAT" at Thomas. "It's fun," the rookie pass catcher replied when I asked him about it. "You know the older guys mess with me a little bit, but it's all in good company."

-- Nine guys wearing socks pulled up to the their knees: Fred Smoot, Chris Wilson, Andre Carter, James Thrash, London Fletcher, Derrick Frost, Matt Sinclair, Chris Horton, and Tavares Washington.

-- Byron Westbrook was wearing full length tights under his shorts. (He didn't participate in drills, he jogged on the side)

-- Free Agent defensive tackle Kevin Huntley was the only player sporting warm up pants at today's practice.

A Day at the Park -- Summer Vacation

Today's OTA was the last one before the team reports for training camp on July 19. So as the team scattered for their "summer break", I tried to get a feel for the kind of plans members of the team have before the season really starts.

Shaun Suisham
"Heading back to Wallsburg, Ontario, my home town. I host a camp for 200 youth. That'll be June 21st. so, I'm looking forward to that, and then I'll be back here for the beginning of July."

Chris Cooley
"I live here. I'll probably be here most of the time and work out. No [vacation plans]. Spend time at home."

Fred Smoot
"Maybe go to Atlantis or something. Something real out of the way chill. Watch a little bit of TV, no TV, I want to get away from the TV and you know, just chill. Get a peace of mind."

Devin Thomas
"I don't have time to vacation. I got to stay on top of everything and keep working. Just prepare myself for the training camp."

Jason Campbell
"We gonna have a couple guys, you know we'll still throw here and there, but you understand that guys are also going to take some time away and do things to be with their family's and take trips. At the same time, we can't get far behind and you can't not do anything. You have to do something, you have to stay in shape and you have to try to do something to keep youself where we left off with OTA's.

Jim Zorn
"My mind is on this. I've got things to do. I want to relax a little bit with my family because I know what's coming. I know the seriousness of what I'm about to partake in."

Definitely the kind of things you what to hear from your #1 QB and your Head Coach, huh?

A Day at the Park -- Smoot... a blogger!?

As I sat down here in my seat in the media room, I was blessed with a sight that any blogger would jump for joy over. Fred Smoot rolled up right in front of me in his 1964 Chevy Impala, at least that's what I believe it to be.

He was, of course, "hittin' dem switches", as I beleve the kids say. Also, keep in mind that the volume from his bass-heavy speakers was literally rattling the windows in front of me.

Not only did Smoot provide me with my best image from the day, he also dropped the biggest bombshell as we spoke after practice about the next step in the evolution of Smoot Smack.

"Soon we be headin' to the shelves. We gonna get that intenet thing going where dey can come on and talk to me back and forth, blogging, and just see the day-to-day life of me and my football team. It should be ready in about a month."

WAIT... Fred Smoot is going to be blogging???

"Yea, actually I'm going to start off and I'll just write my stories and you just flow after that. You just flow. I'll be writing back to my fans."

Will this be like Cooley's Blog?

"I read it before. Cooley would tell me about it. He'd say how it's a hassle sometimes, but I be like, man, come on, I've been talkin' noise my entire life. What people say don't really hurt me."

Let the countdown to Fred Smoot's blog begin. The entire internet can only hope Smoot stays true to his word.

A Day at the Park -- The Prank War

Center Casey Rabach and Kicker Shaun Suisham had what many observed to be an onoing fued during this week's round of OTA's. I admit that I got word of this very late in the game, but I did hear something about Rabach parking his truck in Suisham's spot in the lot, and Suisham letting the air out of Rabach's tires after leaving him a note that said "Parking for Kicker's Only". Nothing too heated, but seemed like something fun. So I went to the kicker to get his take on the week's events.

"I think we both got through the week alright. I'd be ok with it if it just died with mini camp here. I don't want it to [continue through training camp]. I think it's done. A little offseason fun."

So it looks like the kicker is calling a truce. Something tells me the center -- who declined to comment -- may have other ideas.

A Day at the Park -- The Media Vending Machine

Don't you just long for the days when soda machines had nothing but 12-ounce cans, not these 20-ounce behemoth bottles that are the norm nowadays? Even better, you'd be lucky to find one of these new-age machines that cost less than a dollar for a single bottle of soda. Fortunately, the Washington Redskins have your back; well at least they have the backs of the people who cover the team.

Located in the media room at Redskins Park is the world's -- and by "world's" I mean "Ashburn's" -- greatest vending machine. Get this... 25 cents for a 12-ounce can of soda. So, not only are you just spending a quarter, you don't have to slurp down 20 ounces of some carbonated beverage.

Now all we need is a candy machine that dispense Three Muskateers Bars for a quarter as well!

Maryland Musings

Great win in Piscataway yesterday. Chris Turner is the future at QB for the Terps, at least for the rest of the 2007 season. This team has the potential to do some big-time things, but it needs a confident qb, something that Jordan Steffy just doesn't look like at the moment.

Honestly, this win makes last week's loss to Wake Forest hurt a little bit more. 4-1, undefeated in the ACC, and ranked in the top 25 sounds a lot better than 3-2, 0-1 in conference, no votes, but we move on to a huge home game with Georgia Tech.

Should be a great autumn Saturday in College Park with the Yellow Jackets in town for a noon kickoff. The early morning tailgate will begin with most people still sleeping off the hangovers. Special guests are sure to make an appearance with the one and only Phil Elkins finally returning to Maryland for the weekend.

Seeing as how Sunday's are basically a "research" day for me, I guess I can drag myself to the trusty laptop for a few moments.

So, what did we miss?

Redskins: I was hurting that day after the beinnings of my birthday celebration, but I have to say that I kinda liked some of what I saw. Let's reserve judgement for now.

I see no coincidence whatsoever in the fact that XXII is also associated with the Redskins greatest moment, or do I?

Maryland: Not a bad effort, can't say I was too happy with some of the play calling, but I can also see why Fridge has a lack of confidence in his quarterback. Rough spot. Thanks for playing Josh! I truly believe this is a top 15 team with a more mobile, faster qb. This gave me a chuckle, even though it wasn't taken Thursday night in College Park.

I'm sure there are others that are obvious, but my head hurts already.

PLEASE NOTE: There will not be a Blog Show this week, but there will be an interesting Washington Post Live on Monday with Agent Bog joining us LIVE from Philadelphia while Mr I. is on set as a panelist. We also got Stan Kasten on Wednesday, should be great.

The Real Football Factories

In 2004, the motion picture The Football Factory was released to mild fanfare. The star of the film is British actor Danny Dyer, who plays Tommy Johnson, a bored twenty something who lives for the weekend, casual sex, watered down lager, heavily cut drugs, and occasionally kicking the fuck out of someone. The film centers on the rivalries of the firm from Chelsea, the Headhunters. Thorughout the film, the Headhunters battle with numerous British mobs, but most importantly, the Bushwackers, the infamous firm from Millwall. Besides some great lines, such as "Getting beaten up by football hooligans is like having V.D. The fucking pain goes on forever. But that's what makes it so exciting", the film didn't really stand out from other Hooligan-related cinema.

Besides starring in other feature films and on Broadway, Dyer is now the host of a television show called, The Real Football Factories, a documetary style magazine show on the Bravo Network, that focuses on Hooligan Culture. The show is quite popular across the pond and now here is your chance to see it. In this episode, Dyer looks at the Hooligans of Yorkshire, England, including Hull, Sheffield, and Leeds. Enjoy!

The Dude is a student of hooligan culture and one day hopes to immerse himself into the scene to experience it firsthand. Fans who enjoy ballpark food as much as the action on the field will want to take advantage of the Orioles’ newest offer, the All-You-Can-Eat Left Field Club ticket. Launching on July 12, the offer is one of three new special ticket programs the Orioles will debut for the second half of the season. The other two programs - a Super Saturday 4-Pack and 6-Game Sunday Plan - will be offered for weekend games at Camden Yards over the season’s final three months.

The All-You-Can-Eat offer will be valid for all non-prime home games during the remainder of the season. For $35 in advance or $40 on the day of the game, fans receive a seat in sections 280-288 of the Left Field Club Level (a $25 value) and an All-You-Can-East pass for the concession stands located directly behind the sections. Menu items include hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn, nachos, ice cream, soda and lemonade. Concession stands will be open from the time gates open through the 7th inning of the game.

So, it's come to this, huh? I feel bad for the real Orioles fans out there, you deserve better.

WASHINGTON DC – The National Basketball Association recently released the team participants and schedule for the 2007 NBA Summer League presented by adidas, the league’s summer showcase in Las Vegas for top free agents and members of the 2007 NBA Draft class.

“The Las Vegas Summer League is an important part of the development and maturation of our younger players," said Grunfeld. "We are excited to see our younger players have an opportunity to play in a very competitive environment. This will mark our third consecutive summer participating in the Las Vegas Summer League, and we look forward to joining the 21 other teams for an exciting two weeks of basketball."

Additionally, for the first time ever, Comcast SportsNet will broadcast all five of the Wizards’ summer league contests in primetime.

Alexi Lalas ... Moron!

Is it possible that Alexi Lalas is this dumb? There's just no way he can be that unintelligent, right? How can you possible think that the 11-year old MLS is on par with the greatest soccer league in the world, the English Premier League?

The Los Angeles Galaxy president, who scored when the United States beat England 2-0 in a friendly in 1993, told British newspapers that Major League Soccer is on a par with the Premier League.

Look, I'm one of the people who thinks the MLS has grown leaps and bounds over the past few years, but it was hard not to. The level of play in this league was dismal for many years, and by dismal, I mean utterly-awful. It's not like that anymore at all. There is a ton of talent, young and old, on display in the MLS these days, but to go and spout off like Lalas is just plain silly.

"In England, our league is considered second class, but I honestly believe if you took a helicopter and grabbed a bunch of MLS players and took them to the perceived best league in the world they wouldn't miss a beat and the fans wouldn't notice any drop in quality.''

WRONG!
WRONG!
WRONG!

Sure, they are a handful of players currently wearing MLS colors who could definitely play in the EPL, but that handful is very limited. Not only is the EPL's overall talent-level in a different stratosphere than the MLS, it's a much different game. Could you imagine little Freddy Adu going up against some of the blokes in the EPL. That would be a hoot for all involved.

Alexis Lalas should concentrate on getting his crappy team back on track before David Beckham makes his arrival on United States soil, before he goes and defames the most prestigious league in the world like this. It's not good for American Soccer at all when comparisons like this are made. The people who truly care about MLS should stick to trying to grow the fanbase at a grass roots level and not try to take this little league to an international stage, just yet.

At least it is today in the latest edition of the Ballhype Blog Rankings. Is this a real big deal? Not really, but I'm pretty sure Deadspin has held that top spot since the rankings began, so seeing a different name at the top in interesting, at least. I'm also surprised that it happenned on the heels of Deadspin landing an interview with Harold Reynolds, which has been all over the blogosphere, and features a real creepy picture of Deadspin Editor Will Leitch.

What can this push to the top by the huge AOL entity be attributed to? How about the fact that they have 50 billion posts a day? Maybe it's the huge roster of talented writers they have?

Personally, I think it's the new With Leather-ish look!

BTW, The Dude Abides came in at #69. Sweet.

Former Redskins Linebacker LaVar Arrington was seriously hurt in a motorcycle accident early Monday afternoon.

Prince George's County Fire tells WTOP that Arrington is in serious condition after the crash near Route 50 and the Beltway.

I'm sure more deatils will come shortly.

It looks like LaVar's football career is indeed over, if it wasn't already, but let's all hope he is able to make a full recovery from today's events.

UPDATE: The report is that Lavar has suffered 'Priority One Head Trauma'. I'm not a doctor, but that doesn't sound very good to me. Let's keep the entire Arrington Family in our thoughts and prayers.

UPDATE #2: The Redskins Insider is now reporting that some people 'very close' to LaVar said that he broke his arm and his leg in the accident. Let's hope that is the extent of his injuries.

UPDATE #3: 'Priority One' is apparently a 'good thing', in this context. It means a live threatening, but treatable, injury. Also, WUSA has pictures of the crash on their website.

Sorry for the lack of Monday updates. I'm sure the 44 people who have looked at this site today are totally crushed. I was out at an Eastern's Motors commercial shoot today with Steinberg. Great Success! Look for the footage to hit Comcast Sportsnet on Wednesday (although there is a week's worth og BogTV on the hour+ of tape that I shot.

It's fixing to be a busy week for The Dude, so today's lackluster effort could become somewhar of a trend for the next few days. Good news is I will be doing another Live Blog for Washington Post Live on Wednesday. Apparently somebody liked it.

This chick Danica Patrick is really starting to get on my nerves. She hasn't won a single race since joining the IRL and, to be blatently honest, I really don't think she is all that hot. All she seems to do is run her yap about poor little her. Hey Danica, here's some advice. WIN A RACE ALREADY! Then people might care what you think, but right now, nobody gives a hoot.

All you are at this point is a marketing ploy.

While becoming one of the country's most recognizable female athletes, she has ridden shotgun with Jay-Z and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in a music video, dished as a guest co-host of The View and starred in a Super Bowl commercial for Internet domain registrar GoDaddy.com, one of several companies to feature her in national advertising.

In an interesting twist, the day after the Indianapolis 500, famed-columnist (and ultra-feminist) Sally Jenkins took Danica to task.

Her supporters over-congratulate her for being a woman, the highest female finisher at the Indianapolis 500. To her detractors, she has raced in yet another Indy without a victory, making her a winless, Hostess-endorsing twinkie who takes commercial victory laps without ever seeing the checkered flag.

If the piece was written by a male columnist, it wouldn't hold much weight, but coming from Jenkins, I'd say it's pretty damning for Danica Mania.

It's not only columnists who have a problem with little Ms Patrick though. It's obvious that there is a serious disconnect between Danica and her fellow drivers, and even her own teammates. A few weeks back, she cost fellow Andretti Green driver Tony Kanaan a chance at winning in Kansas.

Patrick race strategist Kim Green gave Patrick the verbal go-ahead to leave the pits just as Kanaan approached the adjacent pit box. Patrick's car then sideswiped Kanaan, breaking his suspension and ending Kanaan's hopes for back-to-back victories and possibly his chances of earning his second IndyCar title.

"I'm not trying to point a finger, but I did what I was told," Patrick said.

Good thing Danica took responsibilty, huh? Kanaan told his crew over the radio, "If this ever happens again, I will never drive for you ever."

Just last week after a race in Milwaukee, two-time defending Indycar Series Champion Dan Wheldon had his own run-in with Patrick.

"She's just being Danica. She'll be fine when she calms down. She's messing with the wrong person if she wants to get feisty."

My guess is that will not be the last time we hear about an on-track incident that invloves the little girl they call Danica.

Look Danica, you've started 36 races on the IRL circuit and you've only led a total of 63 laps! Are you freakin' kidding me? Why would the other drivers respect you? You've never finished higher than 4th place. Why do you insist on running your yap all the time? Maybe it's time to look in the mirror and realize that maybe the reason that everyone on the circuit seems to not like you very much is that you are not a very good driver Danica. Interesting concept, huh?

The Ducks are the champs. Somewhere, Emilio Estevez must be smiling. It was just 15 short years ago that Estevez led a rag tag group of youngsters to the district championship, by taking out those bully-ish Hawks. I'll never forget the first time I saw 'The Flying V' soar across the ice. That kid Charlie (played by Joshua Jackson) could really fly!

The motion picture led the formation of the actual team in Anaheim, and now that team is the World Champion.

In honor of Lord Stanley's latest winners, I present the BogTV episode that I think put BogTV on the map. It's from back in late-March when the Stanley Cup visited Capitol Hill, along with another famous Canadian, and BogTV was there.

The Closest Thing to a Derby in American Soccer

I realize that LA Galaxy and Chivas USA have their little west-coast derby, but it's forced and contrived. The only true passion (aka hatred) exists between DC United and RBNY (formerly the New York/New Jersey Metrostars). This rivalry is born out of a 'strong dislike' between the supporter groups and a history of chippiness on the pitch.

Just look what happenned at the 2006 Season Opener when RBNY brought 800 traveling supporters to RFK Stadium.

The rivalry is renewed this Sunday at RFK. Word is that quite a few supporters will be making the journey down I-95 for the match. If you're in the DC Metro Area and are looking for something to do, I suggest heading to Southeast DC and picking up one of the many tickets that will be available. You will not go away disapointed, just make sure you're wearing the right colors.

I'd love to check in with this kid in about 10 years, see how he's doing. Based on his fantastic communication skills, my guess is he's going to be a big hit with the ladies.

Last Night, Dan Steinberg and I went to the First Annual Washington Mystics Gala at The Fairmont Hotel in Downtown DC. Our goal was to get an episode of BogTV out of it, which we did, which you can see on tonight's Washington Post Live.

The big draw of the evening was a performance by Cedric the Entertainer, he off The Original Kings of Comedy fame. Steinz and I didn't stick around for the actual performance, but we got our own little show backstage before Cedric hit the mic. This guy is goofy. Check it out.

I should mention that Cedric was very gracious with his time and Steinz and I both appreciated his effort.

It's Business Time

A story for you. A tale, if you will. Many moons ago, I sat in my man Ariel Agami's apartment with another friend of ours, the one and only Phil Elkins. Phil was going on and on, raving, if you will, about an HBO One Night Stand that he had seen entitled 'The Flight of the Conchords'. Lucky for us, it was On Demand. One fabulous hour later, I realized what I had been missing. Here's a taste.

There's planty more where that came from. I would suggest watching as much of it as you can, unless you don't like laughing, which then I suggest you crawl into a hole and wither away.

Back to the subject at hand. You can only imagine my excitment when I learned that HBO was creating a series called 'Flight of the Conchords'. I can guarantee that this will be one of the funnier shows out there, and the fact that it will air on Sunday night's right after Entourage won't hurt either.

So, I thank you young Mr. Elkins. Without you, I would have been lost in this world.

Isn't the NHL Looking for Publicity?

I really have no idea why Al-Jazeera would want credentials to the Stanley Cup Finals, but I can't for the life of me figure out why the NHL would turn down their request.

Al-Jazeera has no one at the Stanley Cup finals, its credential request having been turned down. Given the paucity of non-aligned (i.e. Southern California) newspapers from the States covering the final between the Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators -- the Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe, both Denver papers, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, New York Daily News and the Buffalo News have been spotted through three games -- you might have thought the NHL would have been happy to reach a, hmmm, really non-traditional hockey market, but, alas, that didn't happen. Why Al-Jazeera saw the news value in something that, say, the Detroit News apparently hasn't is for deeper thinkers than me.

Why would the NHL devoid itself of the opportunity to reach an audience that normally probably wouldn't have much interest in hockey? Is this a case of some sort of media profiling, or did they simply not have room in the press boxes in Anaheim and Ottawa? I guess we'll never know.
